South Africa public holidays 2026

South Africa 2026 pairs a Monday Freedom Day (27 April) with a Friday Workers’ Day (1 May), and adds Monday 10 August after National Women’s Day falls on Sunday 9 August.

South Africa 2026 is easiest to plan around two neighbouring autumn dates: Freedom Day on Monday 27 April and Workers’ Day on Friday 1 May. Many offices already have a short week between those two public holidays.

National Women’s Day is Sunday 9 August 2026. The Public Holidays Act adds the following Monday, and this list shows Monday 10 August as a public holiday. That Monday is the observed weekday, not a second Women’s Day I invented.

Human Rights Day is Saturday 21 March 2026, so it coincides with the weekend. Heritage Day is Thursday 24 September — a mid-week close. Christmas Day is Friday 25 December; Day of Goodwill is Saturday 26 December.

Tuesday 16 June 2026 is Youth Day. It commemorates the 1976 Soweto uprising and is a single mid-week weekday on this list, not the Friday that 2028 uses for the same commemoration.

Wednesday 16 December 2026 is Day of Reconciliation, nine days before Friday Christmas. Together with Thursday Heritage Day, those two mid-week commemorations do not attach to a weekend unless you spend annual leave.

Easter 2026 runs from Good Friday 3 April through Family Day on Monday 6 April. That four-day close is the first long weekend most offices notice after the Saturday Human Rights Day in March.

I am Collins Odeny. Africa Calendar is not the South African government and not a bargaining council. The Public Holidays Act and your employer’s notice still win if they disagree with a row here.

What each public holiday is

New Year's Day

Thursday 1 January 2026 is New Year’s Day. If it had been a Sunday the Act would add Monday; in 2026 it is already a weekday, so only Thursday is lost.

Human Rights Day

Saturday 21 March 2026 is Human Rights Day (Sharpeville). The Saturday civil date coincides with the weekend; this list does not add a Monday for a Saturday holiday.

Good Friday

Friday 3 April 2026 is Good Friday. Family Day on Monday 6 April completes the Easter close.

Family Day

Monday 6 April 2026 is Family Day, the Monday after Easter. Pair it with Good Friday when you count the break.

Freedom Day

Monday 27 April 2026 is Freedom Day, the first democratic election in 1994. A Monday Freedom Day already creates a three-day weekend.

Workers' Day

Friday 1 May 2026 is Workers’ Day, four days after Monday Freedom Day. Many offices see a short week between 27 April and 1 May.

Youth Day

Tuesday 16 June 2026 is Youth Day (1976 Soweto uprising). A Tuesday close is one weekday unless you bridge it.

National Women's Day

Sunday 9 August 2026 is National Women’s Day (1956 march against pass laws). The Act adds the following Monday, which appears as the next row.

National Women's Day (observed)

Sunday 9 August 2026 is National Women’s Day (1956 march against pass laws). The Act adds the following Monday, which appears as the next row.

Heritage Day

Thursday 24 September 2026 is Heritage Day. Cultural gatherings are common; the Thursday itself is a mid-week close.

Day of Reconciliation

Wednesday 16 December 2026 is Day of Reconciliation. It sits near Christmas, so December leave plans should count both.

Christmas Day

Friday 25 December 2026 is Christmas Day. Day of Goodwill follows on Saturday.

Day of Goodwill

Saturday 26 December 2026 is Day of Goodwill. It coincides with the weekend after Friday Christmas.

Freedom Day, Workers’ Day, and the 2026 Sunday rule

The Public Holidays Act generally adds the Monday after a Sunday public holiday. Saturday holidays do not get that Monday on this list.

Fridays in 2026: Good Friday (Friday, 3 April 2026); Workers' Day (Friday, 1 May 2026); Christmas Day (Friday, 25 December 2026). Good Friday, Workers’ Day, and Christmas Day are the Friday closes.

Mondays in 2026: Family Day (Monday, 6 April 2026); Freedom Day (Monday, 27 April 2026); National Women's Day (observed) (Monday, 10 August 2026). Family Day, Freedom Day, and the Women’s Day add-on are the Monday anchors.

Human Rights Day on Saturday 21 March does not add a Monday. National Women’s Day on Sunday 9 August does add Monday 10 August.

Freedom Day (Monday 27 April) plus Workers’ Day (Friday 1 May) is the autumn pair most leave conversations start from.

Neither the leave planner nor the working-days calculator replaces payroll. They only apply South Africa’s weekend rule to the 2026 holiday list on this site.
