Live calculator
Working days calculator
Count working days between two dates, excluding weekends and public holidays, using the same holiday list as Africa Calendar country pages.
The working-days calculator counts weekdays between two dates, then subtracts public holidays that fall on a working weekday. Weekend days are never working days. In Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa the ordinary weekend is Saturday and Sunday. Some other countries in the catalogue treat Saturday as a workday; the live tool follows that country’s weekend rule.
Open the calculator to move the start and end dates, switch Saturday between rest and work where the country allows it, and download a CSV report. The numbers always come from the same public-holiday list used on the country year pages and the leave planner.
A public holiday that already falls on Saturday or Sunday does not reduce the working-day count, because that day was not a workday. A Friday or Monday holiday does reduce it. When two named holidays share one weekday, Africa Calendar still counts one working day lost.
I am Collins Odeny. Africa Calendar is a personal project, not a payroll bureau, government office, or school board. Use this count for planning, then confirm your employer’s calendar and the official gazette before you treat a figure as final for pay.
Start with a country that has a written holiday page: Kenya 2026, Nigeria 2026, or South Africa 2026. From there you can open the leave planner for long weekends, print a wall calendar in the studio, or come back to this calculator with a custom date range. Ads never print on the calendar canvas.
The URL /kenya/2026/working-days/ redirects here on purpose so there is one canonical calculator page. Do not treat a thin alias as a separate product page.
Round-trip checks: count working days in January, subtract known holidays manually, and compare with the live tool — that is the fastest way to trust a range before you email me about a bug.
The Saturday toggle in the live calculator is for workplaces that treat Saturday as a workday. Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa default to Saturday rest; leave it off unless your contract says otherwise. Changing Saturday does not add or remove public holidays from the list — it only changes whether Saturday itself counted as a working weekday before holidays were subtracted.
How the count is built
- Count calendar days in the inclusive range.
- Remove Saturday and Sunday, or that country’s weekend.
- Remove remaining weekdays that are public holidays on this site’s list.
- The remainder is working days.
Methodology details
Weekends: for Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa the default is Saturday and Sunday off. Some countries in the wider catalogue treat Saturday as a workday; the live calculator follows each country’s weekend rule when you switch country.
Public holidays: only weekdays that are public holidays on this site’s list are subtracted. A holiday on Saturday does not reduce the count because that day was never counted as a working weekday.
Inclusive ranges: both the start date and end date count if they are working weekdays. Partial weeks at the edges of a month are included — there is no automatic “full weeks only” mode.
Observed dates: when a law moves a Sunday holiday to Monday, this site lists the civil dates maintained in holiday data. If your employer observes a different weekday, adjust manually.
Duplicate names on one day: if two holiday labels share a single calendar date, Africa Calendar subtracts one weekday, not two.
School-term pages: teaching-day counts on the Kenya 2026 school page use term ranges minus half-term, which is a different question from this tool. Do not mix a school teaching-day total with a payroll working-day total.
The calculator never invents a mid-week observed date that is not on the holiday list. If a gazette notice is missing, the count follows the list as published on the country hub that year.
Kenya 2026 examples
Kenya Q1 2026 (1 January–31 March) is 62 working days on this site’s list. The two weekday holidays in that range are New Year’s Day on Thursday 1 January and Eid al-Fitr on Friday 20 March. Saturday and Sunday never count.
January 2026 in Kenya is 21 working days: 31 calendar days, 9 weekend days, and one weekday holiday (Thursday 1 January).
April 2026 in Kenya is 20 working days. Good Friday (3 April) and Easter Monday (6 April) remove two weekdays. Many teams already treat the whole week lightly even though only those two dates are public holidays.
May 2026 in Kenya is 19 working days. Labour Day on Friday 1 May and Eid al-Adha on Wednesday 27 May each remove one weekday.
June 2026 in Kenya is 21 working days. Madaraka Day on Monday 1 June removes one Monday, so the first weekday that counts is Tuesday 2 June.
December 2026 in Kenya is 22 working days. Christmas Day (Friday 25 December) removes one weekday; Boxing Day on Saturday 26 December does not subtract an extra weekday beyond the weekend rule.
Round-trip check: pick 1–31 January 2026 for Kenya, subtract Thursday 1 January by hand (21 working days), then compare with the live tool. If they disagree, email me with the range before you treat either figure as payroll.
Nigeria June 2026 is 21 working days. Friday 12 June is Democracy Day, so a 1–30 June range loses that Friday plus weekends. Thursday 1 October is Independence Day — one weekday, not a natural long weekend.
South Africa 1 April–31 May 2026 is 39 working days. That range loses Good Friday 3 April, Family Day 6 April, Freedom Day on Monday 27 April, and Workers’ Day on Friday 1 May as four separate weekdays. Tuesday 28 April, Wednesday 29 April, and Thursday 30 April stay ordinary weekdays on this list.
The live tool can download a CSV of the count plus every holiday in the selected range. Attach that file when you email a correction, and say which country you had selected in the calculator.
