Mashujaa Day: from Kenyatta Day to Heroes’ Day

20 October is still the same civil date it was when the day was called Kenyatta Day. The name, the constitutional status, and the leave conversation all changed. This page is about that change, and about how I treat the Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday that 20 October becomes in a given year.

By Collins Odeny. Last updated: 19 October 2026.

The Constitution names the day before any calendar list does

Article 9(3) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 lists three national days: Madaraka Day on 1 June, Mashujaa Day on 20 October, and Jamhuri Day on 12 December. Article 9(4) says a national day shall be a public holiday. Article 9(5) lets Parliament prescribe other public holidays. Mashujaa Day is therefore a constitutional national day, not only a row in a holiday dataset.

I opened that Kenya Law text before I wrote this paragraph. I am not paraphrasing a blog. The Constitution does not call 20 October “Kenyatta Day”. It calls it Mashujaa Day. If a wall calendar still prints Kenyatta Day, the wall calendar is stale relative to the 2010 text.

Mashujaa is Kiswahili for heroes. English commentary often writes Heroes’ Day. I keep Mashujaa Day on Kenya 2026 and on this page because that is the constitutional name. I will not relabel the row “Kenyatta Day” to match an older diary.

What the Kenya Law newsletter records about the rename

Kenya Law’s weekly newsletter 037/2017 discusses Article 9(3) and (4) and the Public Holidays Act together. The holding recorded there is that the Constitution renamed Kenyatta Day and Independence Day as Mashujaa Day and Jamhuri Day, and that those days were treated as renamed under section 7(1) of the Sixth Schedule.

That is the primary trail I will cite for the rename. I did not find, in the pages I opened, a constitutional sentence that narrates why the older name existed. I will not invent a detention date or a biography of Jomo Kenyatta and present it as the legal reason for 20 October. The legal fact I can stand on is the rename itself.

The same newsletter is also why I refuse to treat Mashujaa Day as a nickname I chose for marketing. Kenya Law recorded a court reading of the Constitution. Africa Calendar follows that reading. If a later notice disagrees, the notice wins and this page will say so.

The Public Holidays Act still has to list the day

The Public Holidays Act (the Kenya Law text I opened, marked eng@2024-04-26) keeps a Schedule. Part I includes Mashujaa Day on 20th October, sitting between Mazingira Day on 10th October and Jamhuri Day on 12th December. Part I also lists New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, Madaraka Day, Idd-ul-Fitr, Christmas, and Boxing Day.

Part II of that Schedule is Idd-ul-Azha, “date depending upon the appearance of the moon”. Part III is Diwali on the same lunar footing. Mashujaa Day is not a moon-sighted day. It does not wait for a Cabinet Secretary notice the way Eid al-Fitr does. 20 October is the civil date every year.

Article 9(5) of the Constitution and the Act’s schedule are why Kenya has more public holidays than the three national days. Labour Day and Christmas are public holidays without being national days in Article 9(3). Mashujaa Day is both. That double status is why a 20 October close is not optional colour on a Kenya wall calendar.

What 20 October does to leave in 2026, 2027, and 2028

On this site’s Kenya list, Mashujaa Day is Tuesday 20 October 2026, Wednesday 20 October 2027, and Friday 20 October 2028. Tuesday and Wednesday are mid-week closes. Friday is already a three-day weekend if your workplace rests Saturday and Sunday — the weekend this site uses for Kenya.

2026 also places Mashujaa Day ten days after Saturday 10 October Mazingira Day. They are not one holiday. Mazingira Day is the environment commemoration on the Act’s 10 October row. Mashujaa Day is the heroes’ national day. Spending the week between them as annual leave is a household choice, not a right the Constitution created.

2027 is a substitute-Monday year for other Kenyan Sundays, described on the Kenya 2027 hub and in the Kenya leave-planning guide. Mashujaa Day that year is a Wednesday, so it does not mint a Monday. Do not borrow the Mazingira or Jamhuri Monday story and paste it onto 20 October 2027.

School, payroll, and the week I will not collapse

The Kenya 2026 school calendar is the only dated basic-education circular on this site. Term 3 on that circular runs from 24 August to 23 October 2026. Mashujaa Day therefore sits inside Term 3, three days before the dated term end, not inside the December holiday that begins on 26 October.

A parent who treats “Heroes’ Day week” as an automatic half-term will collide with that circular. I copied the circular onto the school page so I would not have to guess. I will not tell a school to treat Tuesday 20 October 2026 as the start of an unofficial break.

Payroll should keep the constitutional name on the timesheet. “Kenyatta Day” on a 2026 file is how two clerks argue about a day that was not in dispute. The payroll guide stays at concepts; it does not quote a statutory rate for working 20 October.

What I will not add to this story

I will not write a campaign biography of any living official and hang it on Mashujaa Day. The Constitution honours heroes as a class. It does not appoint a single contemporary figure as the day’s subject.

I will not claim that every workplace in Kenya closes on 20 October in the same way. County events, polling days, and employer customs sit outside this page. Confirm the Gazette on Kenya Law and the memo on your notice board.

I will not invent a Sunday-to-Monday rule for Mashujaa Day in a year when 20 October is not a Sunday. In 2026, 2027, and 2028 it is Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. The leave is the weekday itself.

How I would plan around Mashujaa Day

Open the Kenya hub for the year you actually take leave in. Read 20 October as Mashujaa Day, not as a generic mid-October Monday. If you have school-age children in 2026, read the school circular before you buy a bus ticket.

If you need a long weekend in 2026, Friday Christmas does more work than Tuesday Mashujaa Day. In 2028, Friday Mashujaa Day is one of the free long weekends you do not have to buy.

Print from the Kenya 2026 studio after you have the name right. Subscribe at /feeds/ke-2026.ics. If a Gazette notice ever moves the observed weekday, email contact@africacalendar.app and quote the notice. I will correct the holiday list before I argue with the Constitution.
