Planning leave around Kenyan public holidays
Kenya’s year is easiest to read once you separate three documents: the Kenya Gazette for named public holidays, your employer’s observed calendar, and — if you have school-age children — the Ministry of Education circular. This guide is about using those documents together, not reciting the holiday list.

The three calendars a Kenyan household actually uses
The civil list on Kenya 2026 public holidays is the same list the studio paints and the ICS feed at /feeds/ke-2026.ics exports. It is not the Kenya Gazette. When a Cabinet Secretary notice names Eid al-Fitr or moves an observed weekday, I update the holiday list. Until that happens, a lunar date in a later year is an estimate.
Your employer may close on extra days (a Christmas eve, a county event, a polling day) or stay open when a Sunday holiday is not replaced by a Monday. The Employment Act and any workplace policy sit above this website. I am not your HR office. Confirm the Gazette on Kenya Law and the memo on your notice board before you treat a date as paid leave.
Parents have a third calendar. The Kenya 2026 school calendar copies the basic-education circular I have on file: Term 1 from 5 January to 2 April, a February–March half-term, an April holiday from 7 to 24 April, Term 2 from 27 April to 31 July, a June half-term, an August holiday, Term 3 from 24 August to 23 October, then KPSEA and KCSE inside a December holiday that starts on 26 October. That circular is the only school-term source on this site. Do not reuse it for 2027.
How Kenya treats weekends and Sunday holidays
The ordinary Kenyan weekend is Saturday and Sunday. A public holiday that already sits on Saturday does not, on this site’s list, mint a Monday off. Labour Day on Saturday 1 May 2027 is the clean example: Monday 3 May 2027 is a normal weekday here unless your employer says otherwise.
A Sunday holiday is different. Part I practice generally moves the day off to the next weekday that is not already a holiday. On the Kenya 2027 hub that is why Mazingira Day (Sunday 10 October) is followed by Monday 11 October, Jamhuri Day (Sunday 12 December) by Monday 13 December, and Boxing Day (Sunday 26 December) by Monday 27 December. Those three Mondays are the leave story of late 2027.
Easter Sunday is not a Kenyan public holiday. Good Friday and Easter Monday are. That is why 5 April 2026 never appears as an “observed” row. The four-day close is Friday through Monday; the Sunday in the middle is an ordinary weekend, not a third named holiday.
The 2026 map: Fridays you do not have to buy
If you only remember one shape for 2026, remember Fridays. Gazetted Eid al-Fitr is Friday 20 March (notice published 18 March 2026). Good Friday is 3 April. Labour Day is Friday 1 May. Christmas Day is Friday 25 December. Each of those already creates a Friday–Sunday stretch before anyone files a leave form.
Eid al-Adha is Wednesday 27 May 2026, gazetted on 25 May 2026. A Wednesday holiday is a single weekday loss unless you spend Tuesday or Thursday as annual leave. That is a bridging decision, not a right. Madaraka Day is Monday 1 June — a natural three-day weekend that sits ten days after Eid al-Adha, not a second Eid.
Mazingira Day (10 October), Mashujaa Day (20 October), and Jamhuri Day (12 December) are the named Kenyan commemorations that do not exist on the Nigerian or South African lists. They are mid-week or weekend-adjacent depending on the year; in 2026 they are the late-year markers you match against Term 3 and the December holiday, not against a 27 April analogue from another republic.
Where Easter 2026 actually sits against school
Term 1 ends on Thursday 2 April 2026. Good Friday is 3 April and Easter Monday is 6 April. The April holiday on the circular then runs from Tuesday 7 April to Friday 24 April. Easter week is therefore after classes stop and before the dated “April holiday” begins — a three-piece staircase, not one blob labelled April.
That staircase matters if you are booking a bus to the coast. The cheap assumption is “Easter is inside the April holiday.” The circular on this site says otherwise: 3–6 April are public-holiday and weekend days after Term 1, and 7–24 April are the school holiday proper. Roads and lodgings fill on both sides of that line for different reasons.
Eid al-Fitr on Friday 20 March 2026 falls inside Term 1, after the 25 February–1 March half-term. It is a one-day national close during class time. Families who want a longer Idd break must spend Thursday 19 March or use the weekend only. I will not tell a school to treat Friday 20 March as the start of an unofficial week off.
2027 and 2028 are not 2026 with the year scratched out
2027 is a substitute-Monday year. Easter jumps earlier: Good Friday 26 March and Easter Monday 29 March, so the four-day close finishes before April begins. Labour Day is a Saturday and does not grow a Monday on this list. The distinctive leave days are the three autumn and December Mondays after Sunday holidays, described on the Kenya 2027 page.
2028 opens on Saturday 1 January, so New Year’s Day does not remove a January weekday. Easter sits in mid-April (Good Friday 14 April through Easter Monday 17 April). Labour Day is Monday 1 May. Eid al-Adha is listed on Friday 5 May. That is three named public-holiday weekdays inside about three weeks, with ordinary Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in between. Mazingira Day and Jamhuri Day are Tuesdays — mid-week closes, not Monday add-ons. Christmas is Monday 25 December, the opposite of 2026’s Friday Christmas.
Lunar dates in 2027 and 2028 stay estimates until a Gazette notice appears. Eid al-Fitr is listed as Tuesday 9 March 2027 and Saturday 26 February 2028. Treat those rows as planning smoke, not as payroll locks. The moon-sighting guide explains why I refuse to invent a second Eid weekday.
Bridging days, and when they are a bad idea
A bridging day is an ordinary weekday you spend as annual leave to join a holiday to a weekend. Tuesday after a Monday Madaraka, or Thursday before a Friday Labour Day, are the usual Kenyan examples. The Kenya 2026 leave planner highlights natural Friday and Monday holidays; it does not spend your leave for you.
Bridging is expensive when two named days already sit close together. In 2028 the April–May cluster already removes Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, and a listed Friday Eid al-Adha. Spending extra days to “join” that cluster into one continuous holiday can wipe a quarter of a typical leave balance. Count first with the working-days calculator.
Bridging is also a poor idea during KPSEA (26–29 October 2026) and KCSE (2–20 November 2026) if you share a house with a candidate. The December holiday has already started for non-candidates on 26 October, but exam households are not on holiday. Book family travel after the papers, not across them.
Named Kenyan days that confuse imported calendars
Madaraka Day (1 June) marks internal self-government in 1963, not independence. Jamhuri Day (12 December) marks the republic. Mashujaa Day (20 October) is Heroes’ Day. Mazingira Day (10 October) is the environment commemoration that replaced the older Moi Day / Huduma Day / Utamaduni Day labels on this site’s list. If an imported app still says “Moi Day”, it is stale.
Those four names are why a Kenya page cannot be a find-and-replace of a South Africa page. The 1994 election commemoration, Heritage Day, and Day of Reconciliation answer a different history. I write them on the South Africa guide and I do not drag them here.
Boxing Day (26 December) is the weekday after Christmas. In 2026 it is a Saturday, so it does not add a weekday. In 2027 it is a Sunday with Monday 27 December observed. In 2028 it is Tuesday 26 December after a Monday Christmas — two December weekdays off in a row, without a Sunday-rule Monday.
A practical leave sequence I actually use
I open the year hub and mark every Friday and Monday holiday in one colour. I open the school page and mark term ends and exam windows in another. I only then look at remaining annual leave. That order stops me from spending leave on a week the circular already freed, or on a Friday the Gazette already closed.
For 2026 that usually means: do not spend leave on 20 March, 3–6 April, 1 May, or 25 December unless you need a longer trip; consider a single bridging day around Wednesday 27 May if the household wants a five-day Eid al-Adha stretch; treat 1 June as a free long weekend; keep late October and November clear if anyone is sitting KPSEA or KCSE.
Print the wall grid from the Kenya 2026 studio after that exercise, not before. A pretty PDF that ignores the school circular is how families double-book. Subscribe to /feeds/ke-2026.ics so phones pick up a gazette correction after I publish it. If a date on this guide disagrees with a notice you are holding, email contact@africacalendar.app and quote the Gazette.
