Planning leave around Nigerian federal holidays
Nigeria’s useful split is not “Muslim holidays versus Christian holidays.” It is federal announcement versus state circular, and Friday national days versus Sunday national days. This guide is about that split. It is not a second copy of the holiday list.

Federal list, state extras, and why both can be right
The Nigeria 2026 hub lists federal public holidays the studio paints. Id el Fitr, Good Friday, Workers’ Day, Democracy Day, Id el Kabir, Independence Day, Christmas, and Boxing Day appear there because they are on the federal calendar this site uses. That is the list /feeds/ng-2026.ics exports.
State governments can add or shift observed days. A state may declare an extra day after Id el Kabir, a governor’s commemoration, or a local election. Those extras will not appear on this federal page, and I will not invent them from memory. If you work outside the FCT, the circular on your state government website or the notice on your gate wins.
I operate this site from Kenya. I do not sit in Abuja and I do not speak for the Federal Ministry of Interior, which is the office that typically announces federal public holidays. Africa Calendar is a personal project. When Interior and this site disagree, Interior wins.
Friday 2026: the year that already bought you long weekends
2026 clusters Fridays. Id el Fitr is Thursday 19 March and Friday 20 March. Good Friday is 3 April. Workers’ Day is Friday 1 May. Democracy Day is Friday 12 June. Christmas Day is Friday 25 December. Each Friday close is a three-day weekend without annual leave, assuming your workplace uses a Saturday–Sunday rest — the default this site uses for Nigeria.
Independence Day is Thursday 1 October 2026. That is a mid-week national day, a parade and broadcast date more than a natural long weekend. Spending Friday 2 October as leave turns it into four days off; spending nothing leaves a single Thursday hole in the timesheet. Democracy Day on Friday 12 June is the easier mid-year marker if you can only stretch one federal day.
Id el Kabir is Wednesday 27 May and Thursday 28 May 2026. The Federal Ministry of Information published the Interior declaration of both days as public holidays for Eid ul Adha. Those two weekdays are already on the hub and on /feeds/ng-2026.ics. They are not pending, and they are not estimates.
Democracy Day and Independence Day do different jobs
Democracy Day (12 June) commemorates the 1993 election and the 2018 shift of the June 12 public holiday. Independence Day (1 October) commemorates 1960. They are not interchangeable “national days” for leave planning. One often sits near mid-year school breaks in households that follow a three-term year; the other sits in the fourth quarter next to budget season and, in many offices, the start of Christmas travel talk.
Weekday changes flip their value. On the Nigeria 2027 hub, Democracy Day is Saturday 12 June with Monday 14 June listed as a substitute, while Independence Day is Friday 1 October — so October, not June, is the natural three-day federal weekend. On the Nigeria 2028 hub, Democracy Day returns to Monday 12 June, and Independence Day is Sunday 1 October. A Sunday Independence Day is a ceremony date unless a substitute Monday appears in the data. This list does not add Monday 2 October 2028.
If you are coordinating a team across Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, publish both dates and the weekday, not only the name. “We close for Independence Day” means Thursday in 2026, Friday in 2027, and Sunday in 2028. The name stayed still. The leave did not.
Substitute Mondays in 2027, and the Mondays I will not invent
Nigeria 2027 is a substitute-day year on this list. Workers’ Day lands on Saturday 1 May, and this list also shows Monday 3 May as a substitute. Democracy Day lands on Saturday 12 June, with Monday 14 June listed as the substitute. Those Mondays exist because they are already on this list, not because I applied a Kenyan Sunday rule by habit.
Christmas Day is Saturday 25 December 2027 and Boxing Day is Sunday 26 December 2027. Both sit on the ordinary weekend. This page does not invent a Monday Christmas observed date. If your employer closes Monday 27 December 2027, that is a workplace decision or a later Interior notice, not a row I will fabricate.
New Year’s Day is Friday 1 January 2027 — the same Friday pattern at the other end of the year from Independence Day. Easter is late March: Good Friday 26 March and Easter Monday 29 March. Id el Fitr is listed on Tuesday 9 March 2027; Id el Kabir on Sunday 16 May 2027. Treat the lunar dates as estimates until Interior publishes the declared days off. The moon-sighting guide is the place for that uncertainty, not a second guess on this page.
2028: a Saturday New Year and a Sunday Independence Day
Nigeria 2028 starts on Saturday 1 January, so New Year’s Day does not remove a January weekday. Easter sits in mid-April: Good Friday 14 April and Easter Monday 17 April. Workers’ Day is Monday 1 May. Id el Kabir is listed on Friday 5 May. That April–May band is the densest stretch of named weekdays on the 2028 federal page.
Id el Fitr is listed on Saturday 26 February 2028, the earliest Gregorian Id el Fitr of the three years on this site, and still an estimate. Christmas is Monday 25 December and Boxing Day is Tuesday 26 December. Compare that with 2027, when both Christmas and Boxing Day sat on the weekend and added no weekday.
The planning mistake I see most often is copying a 2026 Friday strategy into 2028. Friday Christmas is gone. Friday Democracy Day is gone. Monday Democracy Day and Monday Workers’ Day are the free long weekends. Sunday Independence Day is not. Plan the year from the 2028 hub, not from last year’s wall calendar.
Workers’ Day, Easter, and the names imported apps get wrong
Nigeria’s 1 May row is Workers’ Day on this list, not Labour Day. South Africa and Kenya use Labour / Workers language differently; the Nigeria guide keeps the federal name. Good Friday and Easter Monday appear; Nigeria does not give the Monday after Good Friday a second civil name the way Pretoria’s statute does.
Id el Fitr and Id el Kabir are the federal spellings this dataset uses for the two Eid holidays. Other pages on the internet write Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. They are the same commemorations with different romanisations. I keep the federal spellings on Nigeria pages so a payroll clerk comparing this site to an Interior circular is not hunting for a third name.
Imported phone calendars sometimes mark 1 October as a Monday every year, or add Children’s Day and other observances as if they were federal public holidays. This site’s Nigeria hubs still show Children’s Day, Islamic New Year, and National Youth Day, but they are labelled observances, never official, and they are left out of the public-holiday count and the next-public-holiday countdown. An observance that is not a public holiday does not close a federal office on this list.
How I would sequence a Nigerian leave conversation
Put the federal Friday and Monday holidays on the table first. In 2026 that is a long list; in 2028 it is a shorter, differently shaped list. Then ask whether the state has declared extras. Then ask whether the team includes people who will be off for a second Id day even if the federal list shows one. Only then spend annual leave on bridging Thursdays.
There is no Nigeria school-term circular on this site. I will not paste Kenyan Term 1 dates onto a Lagos household. If you need to match federal holidays to a school, use the circular your school actually issued, then read it against the Nigeria holiday list. The school-terms guide explains that method without inventing Nigerian dates.
Print from the studio after you pick Nigeria and the year. Subscribe at /feeds/ng-2026.ics, /feeds/ng-2027.ics, or /feeds/ng-2028.ics. Count a custom range with the working-days calculator. If a federal or state notice disagrees with a row here, email contact@africacalendar.app and quote the announcement. I would rather correct one Monday than leave a confident error on a page people print.
