School terms, holidays, and family travel

A national public holiday is a bad proxy for “the children are off.” Terms, half-terms, exam windows, and gazette holidays overlap in ways that wreck a cheap flight. This guide is about that overlap. The only dated school circular on Africa Calendar is Kenya 2026.

Why I will not invent term dates for Nigeria or South Africa

Schools are local. A federal public-holiday list is national. I have a Kenya Ministry of Education 2026 academic circular for basic education, and I copied its ranges onto the Kenya 2026 school calendar. I do not have a circular I trust for Nigerian federal unity schools, for a Western Cape public-school year, or for 2027 Kenya. Inventing those ranges would make this page look complete and be wrong.

If you are not planning around Kenyan basic education, take the method from this article and the dates from the letter your school actually sent. Read that letter against the matching holiday hub — Nigeria 2026 or South Africa 2026 — the same way I place the Kenyan circular next to the Kenya list.

Private schools, international calendars, and universities run different years again. A May–June university exam week can sit inside a basic-education holiday. This guide will not collapse those systems into one “Africa school calendar.”

The Kenya 2026 staircase, without the marketing blur

Term 1 runs from Monday 5 January to Thursday 2 April 2026, with a half-term from Wednesday 25 February to Sunday 1 March. Good Friday is 3 April and Easter Monday is 6 April — after Term 1 ends. The April holiday then runs from Tuesday 7 April to Friday 24 April. Term 2 opens Monday 27 April and runs to Friday 31 July, with a half-term from Wednesday 24 June to Sunday 28 June.

The August holiday runs from Monday 3 August to Friday 21 August. Term 3 runs from Monday 24 August to Friday 23 October. KPSEA is dated 26–29 October. KCSE is dated 2–20 November. The December holiday for non-candidates starts on 26 October — the same date as KPSEA — and runs to 1 January 2027. Candidates are not on that holiday while papers are on.

Source, as the school page already states: Ministry of Education 2026 academic circular (basic education). Confirm the circular and your school’s notice board. A boarding school can open a day earlier or later than the national range. The Kenya Law site will not host that boarding letter; the Ministry of Education issues the national circular, and the school issues the local one.

Public holidays that fall inside class time

Eid al-Fitr on Friday 20 March 2026 sits inside Term 1, after half-term. It is a one-day national close during a teaching term. Mashujaa Day on Tuesday 20 October 2026 sits inside Term 3, three days before Term 3 ends on 23 October. Madaraka Day on Monday 1 June 2026 sits inside Term 2. Those days close offices. They do not, by themselves, create a family beach week.

Jamhuri Day on Saturday 12 December 2026 sits inside the December holiday. Christmas on Friday 25 December does too. Those are the dates when a public holiday and a school holiday reinforce each other. Book the longer trip there, not across Mashujaa week, unless you only need a long weekend without children in class.

Mazingira Day on Saturday 10 October 2026 is a weekend commemoration during Term 3. It does not add a weekday. Treating it as a travel window is a category error. The leave planner will not highlight it as a Friday or Monday holiday, and that is correct.

Exam windows are travel traps

KPSEA (26–29 October 2026) and KCSE (2–20 November 2026) occupy the same stretch of the year as the December holiday for non-candidates. A household with a Grade 6 or Form 4 candidate is not free on 26 October. A household without a candidate might be. Mixing those two households in one family WhatsApp is how an aunt books a reunion on the morning of a paper.

I do not publish paper-by-paper timetables. The circular on this site gives windows, not daily schedules. Centres, reporting times, and outcome-release dates come from the examining body and the school. Use the windows as “do not leave town” markers, not as permission to book the afternoon of the last date.

If you must travel during an exam window — a funeral, a visa appointment — travel without the candidate and without the parent who is meant to be at the gate. That sounds obvious until a cheap group fare forces everyone onto the same ticket. Split the booking. The public-holiday list will not save you from a family-fare constraint.

Half-terms are short, and they sit next to ordinary weekdays

The February–March 2026 half-term is Wednesday 25 February to Sunday 1 March. That is three teaching weekdays and a weekend, not a fortnight. The June half-term is Wednesday 24 June to Sunday 28 June, the same shape. You can visit grandparents. You cannot pretend it is the April holiday.

Africa Calendar counts nested half-term weekdays as break, not teaching, when it totals the year on the school page. That is an accounting choice for the summary numbers. It does not mean a school cannot set a prep day on the Monday after half-term. Read the school letter for reporting dates.

Half-terms that do not touch a public holiday are the easiest family windows to miss, because they do not light up on a holiday grid. Put them on the wall calendar as custom dates in the studio. Custom dates stay in your browser; they print with the public holidays if you choose. The product guide shows how.

Cross-border families, and calendars that refuse to align

A household with one parent working in Nairobi and cousins in Johannesburg will not find a shared “April holiday.” South Africa’s Easter 2026 is the same Good Friday and Monday pair, but South African schools are not on the Kenyan circular. The national holidays that overlap — Easter, Workers’ / Labour Day, Christmas — are the realistic reunion dates, not a fictional shared term break.

A household split between Lagos and Nairobi has Friday 20 March 2026 in common as Id el Fitr / Eid al-Fitr on this site’s lists, and Friday 25 December as Christmas. Independence Day (1 October, Nigeria) and Jamhuri Day (12 December, Kenya) will not match. Do not force them. Pick the shared named days or pick a school holiday in one country and accept that the other adult is working.

Lunar holidays make cross-border plans more fragile, because two governments can gazette neighbouring days. Kenya 2026 happened to land Eid al-Fitr on the same Friday as Nigeria’s Id el Fitr on this dataset. That will not always be true. Hold deposits, not non-refundable group tickets, until both notices exist. The moon-sighting guide is the companion article for that delay.

A booking order that has saved me money

Write the school ranges first, including exam windows. Write the public holidays second, from the Kenya 2026 hub or the matching country page. Circle the stretches where both are off. Only those stretches get a long-distance booking. Single public holidays inside a term get a local trip or none.

For 2026 Kenya, the long family windows on this circular are 7–24 April, 3–21 August, and late October through the new year for non-candidates — with November reserved if anyone is sitting KCSE. Easter 3–6 April is a bonus long weekend immediately before the April holiday, useful if you can leave on Thursday 2 April after Term 1.

Print one wall calendar from the Kenya 2026 studio with both layers in mind. Use the leave planner for the public-holiday Fridays and Mondays. Email contact@africacalendar.app if a circular you are holding disagrees with a range on the school page. I will check it. I will not silently extend Term 1 to swallow Easter so the story is tidier.
