Planning leave around South African public holidays

South Africa is the country on this site where a statute, not only a gazette notice, explains the extra Mondays. The Public Holidays Act is why Sunday 9 August 2026 produces Monday 10 August on the list. This guide starts from that rule, then walks the three years I have written hubs for.

By Collins Odeny. Last updated: 19 October 2026.

The Sunday rule before any year-specific story

When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is also a public holiday under section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994. That is the rule behind several rows people call “extra days” as if I had invented them. I did not. The Act did.

The South African government’s public holidays page is the front door I trust for the named days and for pointers into the Act. The Department of Employment and Labour is the labour front door. Africa Calendar is not either office. I am Collins Odeny, writing from Kenya, and a bargaining council or a presidential announcement still beats this website.

A Saturday public holiday does not automatically create a Monday. Human Rights Day on Saturday 21 March 2026 coincides with the weekend and stops there on this list. Workers’ Day on Saturday 1 May 2027 likewise does not mint Monday 3 May here. Do not import Kenya’s Sunday-only habit onto a Saturday and call it the Act.

Family Day is not Easter Monday with a different sticker

South Africa names the Monday after Good Friday as Family Day. Kenya and Nigeria call that weekday Easter Monday. The commemoration is adjacent; the legal name on a South African timesheet is Family Day. I keep the Act’s name on South Africa 2026 and I do not relabel it for visitors who arrived from the Kenya hub.

Easter 2026 is Good Friday 3 April through Family Day Monday 6 April. Easter 2027 is Good Friday 26 March through Family Day 29 March. Easter 2028 is Good Friday 14 April through Family Day 17 April. Those four-day closes are the first long weekend most offices notice after whenever Human Rights Day sat that year.

Day of Goodwill (26 December) is the South African name for the weekday many other countries call Boxing Day. In 2026 it is a Saturday. In 2027 it is a Sunday, and Monday 27 December appears as a public holiday under the Sunday rule. In 2028 Christmas is Monday 25 December and Day of Goodwill is Tuesday 26 December. Using “Boxing Day” in a Cape Town payroll file is how two teams argue about a row that was never in dispute.

2026: Monday Freedom Day beside Friday Workers’ Day

The 2026 autumn pair is the leave story I would print on a sticky note. Freedom Day is Monday 27 April. Workers’ Day is Friday 1 May. Many offices already have a short week between those two public holidays. Tuesday 28 April, Wednesday 29 April, and Thursday 30 April 2026 are ordinary weekdays on this list. They are not a continuous public-holiday week. Spend them as annual leave only if you mean to.

National Women’s Day is Sunday 9 August 2026. The Act adds Monday 10 August, and this list shows that Monday. It is the observed weekday, not a second Women’s Day. Heritage Day is Thursday 24 September — a mid-week close. Youth Day is Tuesday 16 June. Day of Reconciliation is Wednesday 16 December, nine days before Friday Christmas.

Human Rights Day is Saturday 21 March 2026, so March does not lose a weekday to 21 March itself. The first weekday-losing commemoration after New Year is therefore the Easter pair in April, not Human Rights Day. That is the opposite of 2027.

2027: a March that works twice, and a year-end Monday

On South Africa 2027, Human Rights Day is Sunday 21 March, so Monday 22 March is a public holiday. Good Friday is 26 March and Family Day is Monday 29 March. Late March therefore contains both a Sunday-plus-Monday Human Rights pair and the Easter four-day close. That is a dense patch for payroll and for anyone who still thought March was “quiet”.

Freedom Day is Tuesday 27 April 2027 — a mid-week commemoration of the 1994 election, not the Monday it was in 2026. Workers’ Day is Saturday 1 May 2027 and does not, on this list, mint an extra Monday. The 2026 sticky note (Monday Freedom Day, Friday Workers’ Day) is wrong if you reuse it.

National Women’s Day is Monday 9 August 2027, so August already has a three-day weekend without a substitute add-on. Heritage Day is Friday 24 September 2027, another natural three-day weekend. December ends with Saturday Christmas, Sunday Day of Goodwill, and Monday 27 December listed under the Sunday rule. That Monday is the distinctive year-end weekday off compared with 2026.

2028: Friday Youth Day and a Heritage Monday

On South Africa 2028, Youth Day is Friday 16 June — the cleanest mid-year long weekend on that page. Heritage Day is Sunday 24 September, and Monday 25 September appears as the added public holiday. Those two dates do more leave work than Thursday Freedom Day that year.

New Year’s Day is Saturday 1 January 2028. Human Rights Day is Tuesday 21 March. Freedom Day is Thursday 27 April. Workers’ Day is Monday 1 May. National Women’s Day is Wednesday 9 August — a mid-week close with no Sunday substitute attached. Day of Reconciliation is Saturday 16 December. Christmas is Monday 25 December.

If you are counting working days for a second-quarter contract, subtract Good Friday, Family Day, Thursday Freedom Day, and Monday Workers’ Day as four separate weekday losses. Do not treat 27 April–1 May 2028 as one continuous public-holiday week. Friday 28 April 2028 is the ordinary weekday between Thursday Freedom Day and the weekend; Saturday 29 April and Sunday 30 April 2028 are already rest days unless your employer closes Friday as well.

Bargaining councils, and the days this page will never list

Sectoral determinations and bargaining council agreements can add observed days or change how a Sunday is treated for a particular workforce. A mine, a municipality, or a metal-industry shop may close when this federal-style list stays open. I will not scrape those agreements into this holiday list. Ask the council or the employer.

Provincial commemorations and election days can also appear in a workplace calendar without appearing here. The hubs on this site stay with the national public-holiday set the studio already uses. That is a scope decision, not a claim that nothing else exists.

There is no South African school-term circular on this site. I will not borrow a Western Cape term date from a news article and present it as if I had copied a circular. Read your school’s own letter against the South Africa holiday list the same way the school-travel guide describes for Kenya.

A leave sequence that respects the Act

Mark every Sunday public holiday and the Monday the Act adds. Mark Family Day as Family Day. Mark Freedom Day, Youth Day, Women’s Day, Heritage Day, and Day of Reconciliation by name so a mixed team does not collapse them into “another Monday off.” Then open the working-days calculator for the quarter you are staffing.

In 2026, decide deliberately whether the 28–30 April weekdays between Freedom Day and Workers’ Day are leave or work. In 2027, protect late March before you approve any other autumn leave. In 2028, take the Friday Youth Day and the Heritage Monday as the free long weekends and stop expecting Monday Freedom Day.

Print from the studio after picking South Africa and the year. Subscribe at /feeds/za-2026.ics, /feeds/za-2027.ics, or /feeds/za-2028.ics. The product guide shows the export steps. If the Act or a presidential announcement disagrees with a row, email contact@africacalendar.app. I will correct the holiday list; I will not argue with the statute.
