Nigeria public holidays 2028
Nigeria 2028 starts on a Saturday, returns Democracy Day to Monday 12 June, and lists Independence Day on Sunday 1 October — a weekend national day rather than a mid-week close.
Nigeria 2028 starts on Saturday 1 January, so New Year’s Day does not remove a January weekday. Democracy Day returns to Monday 12 June — a natural long weekend in the other direction from 2026’s Friday Democracy Day.
Independence Day is Sunday 1 October 2028. A Sunday national day is a parade date more than a weekday close unless a substitute Monday appears on this list. This list does not add Monday 2 October unless that Monday is already here.
Easter sits in mid-April: Good Friday 14 April and Easter Monday 17 April. Workers’ Day is Monday 1 May 2028. Id el Kabir is listed on Friday 5 May 2028. That April–May band is the densest stretch of named weekdays on the 2028 page.
Id el Fitr is listed on Saturday 26 February 2028. Christmas is Monday 25 December and Boxing Day is Tuesday 26 December. Compare that with 2027, when both Christmas and Boxing Day sat on the weekend.
This is still a personal project by Collins Odeny, not a federal gazette. Nigerian employers and state governments publish their own observed dates.
What each public holiday is
New Year's Day
Saturday 1 January 2028 is New Year’s Day. January does not lose a weekday to 1 January on a Saturday–Sunday weekend rule.
Id el Fitr
Saturday 26 February 2028 is the listed Id el Fitr date. It coincides with the weekend and remains an estimate.
Good Friday
Friday 14 April 2028 is Good Friday. Easter is in mid-April again.
Easter Monday
Monday 17 April 2028 is Easter Monday. The federal Easter close is 14–17 April including the weekend.
Worker's Day
Monday 1 May 2028 is Workers’ Day. May starts with a Monday holiday rather than a Friday or a Saturday-plus-substitute pair.
Id el Kabir
Friday 5 May 2028 is the listed Id el Kabir date, later in the same week as Workers’ Day. The lunar date is still an estimate.
Islamic New Year
Observance — not a public holiday
Thursday 25 May 2028 is Islamic New Year (1 Muharram) on this Nigeria list. It is an observance, not a federal public holiday, two days before Saturday Children’s Day on the same page.
Children's Day
Observance — not a public holiday
Saturday 27 May 2028 is Children’s Day on this Nigeria list. It is an observance, not a federal public holiday. The Saturday civil date coincides with the ordinary weekend.
Democracy Day
Monday 12 June 2028 is Democracy Day — a natural long weekend, the opposite attachment from 2026’s Friday. Civilian-rule commemorations still fall on 12 June; only the weekday changed.
Birthday of Muhammad (Mawlid)
Birthday of Muhammad (Mawlid) is listed as a Nigerian public holiday in this project’s holiday data. Federal offices and most banks close. Confirm the official announcement if you need the date for payroll.
Independence Day
Sunday 1 October 2028 is Independence Day. This list does not add a Monday 2 October row. A Sunday national day is the civil date; a weekday off that week needs an employer or later notice.
National Youth Day
Observance — not a public holiday
Wednesday 1 November 2028 is National Youth Day on this Nigeria list. It is an observance, not a federal public holiday, so a Wednesday mark here is not a federal weekday close.
Christmas Day
Monday 25 December 2028 is Christmas Day, so the December close starts on a Monday.
Boxing Day
Tuesday 26 December 2028 is Boxing Day, the weekday immediately after Monday Christmas.
Monday Democracy Day and a Sunday Independence Day
2028 returns Democracy Day to Monday 12 June and puts Independence Day on Sunday 1 October. Those two facts are the opposite of 2026’s Friday Democracy Day and Thursday Independence Day.
Fridays in 2028: Good Friday (Friday, 14 April 2028); Id el Kabir (Friday, 5 May 2028).
Mondays in 2028: Easter Monday (Monday, 17 April 2028); Worker's Day (Monday, 1 May 2028); Democracy Day (Monday, 12 June 2028); Christmas Day (Monday, 25 December 2028). Workers’ Day, Democracy Day, and Christmas Day are the Monday anchors.
Sunday Independence Day does not automatically create Monday 2 October on this list. I will not add that Monday myself.
New Year’s Day and listed Id el Fitr are Saturdays. They overlap the weekend.
Neither the leave planner nor the working-days calculator replaces payroll. They only apply Nigeria’s weekend rule to the 2028 holiday list on this site.

Sunday 1 October 2028 is Independence Day on this page. A weekday off that week exists only if your employer or a later notice creates one.
